The basics

What is Dogear?

A membership community for permanent, reciprocal exchanges of physical books. You list books you are ready to pass on, keep a wishlist of what you would like next, and exchange directly with other readers — locally or by mail.

Is Dogear a marketplace?

No. Books are not sold, rented or lent through Dogear. Every exchange is reciprocal: two readers each pass a book forward.

Do I get my original book back?

No. A swap permanently transfers ownership. You keep what you receive, and the other reader keeps what you sent.

What kinds of books can I list?

Physical books you own and are ready to pass on, in a condition another reader would be happy to receive. Describe any damage honestly.

Can I sell books on Dogear?

No. Dogear is for exchanges, not sales.

Membership and cost

How does the free trial work?

Your trial ends at the earlier of three months or your second completed swap. A card is required to start it, and Dogear tells you before an action would complete the trial and begin paid membership.

How much does membership cost?

$7.99 per month, or $79.99 per year — about $6.67 a month, saving $15.89 against twelve monthly payments.

Are swaps unlimited?

Yes. Membership covers unlimited swap participation, with no per-exchange fee.

Is postage included?

No. When books are mailed, postage is paid separately from membership. Local exchanges may cost nothing to complete.

Can I cancel my membership?

Yes, at any time from your account settings.

Exchanging books

Can I exchange books locally?

Yes. Arrange to meet somewhere public and hand the books over. No postage is involved.

What happens if nobody accepts my request?

A swap request stays open for 24 hours. If it is not accepted, it closes on its own. Nothing is charged and your book is available to offer again.

What is a Book Passport?

A record of a physical copy's journey — its exchanges, the places it has traveled, and how many readers have enjoyed it. It stays with the book, not with your account.

Privacy, problems and apps

Is my address public?

No. Your street address is never shown publicly or to another member. It is used to produce a shipping label for a specific exchange.

What happens if there is a problem?

Report it from inside the exchange so Dogear support can review the exchange record and follow up. Exchange records are kept, which is what makes a problem answerable.

Is there a mobile app?

Dogear is a website that works on a phone, a tablet and a computer. There is no separate app to download.
